While capacity management alone will not achive strategic greening of storage platforms, it is an important ingredient of an overall solution.  Technologies, which are discussed here, for compression, de-duplication, thin provisioning, virtualization, etc. have two potential roles to play in a data center greening program.  At the outset, judicious application of these technologies can forestall the rate at which new capacity must be added to infrastructure -- buying time while an effective program of data management and data hygiene are implemented.  Once the storage junk drawer is in some sort of order, some of these technologies will likely be useful in maintaining and managing capacity allocation efficiency.
