Welcome to the Green Data Journal, the official publication of the Green Data Project.

Here, you can read about techniques and best practices for managing data in order to reduce the need to add capacity to your storage, server and network infrastructure -- which, in turn, can help to stem the spiraling power requirements of data center operations.  (As a bonus, putting your data in order will also enable you to comply more readily with legal and regulatory mandates on data retention and deletion and better allocate resources and services for data security and data protection.)

This section will be updated with content that includes

  • Analyses of trends and directions in data management and infrastructure technologies
  • Critiques of green approaches proffered by vendors of information technology hardware and software
  • Case studies describing approaches that are yielding results
  • Opinions by business, tech industry and government insiders
  • News on the green data center initiatives underway around the world

Registered members of the Green Data Project will be able to comment on the articles and research posted here.  They can also suggest links to resources on the web and submit their own views and experiences for publication on the site.  We do ask, if you are a vendor, to identify yourself and your product to provide context around your comments.  Please refrain from making blatant product pitches:  you can post links to your products on our link pages.

There is no cost to register with the Green Data Project and registration information will not be shared with anyone.  Our goal is to cultivate an active discussion of the challenges we face in seeking to green our IT operations, to identify strategies and best practices that produce results, and to check the marketecture that too often substitutes for intelligent dialog on these important topics.  Your participation is welcome.

Thanks.
